V roce 1988 utrp\u011bl basketbalov\u00fd t\u00fdm USA v\u00e1\u017enou r\u00e1nu b\u011bhem olympijsk\u00fdch her v Soulu pot\u00e9, co "Yankees" vypadli v semifin\u00e1le po proh\u0159e se SSSR. Ameri\u010dan\u00e9 se nakonec museli spokojit s bronzem, ale ud\u00e1losti, kter\u00e9 n\u00e1sledovaly, nav\u017edy zm\u011bnily sv\u011bt basketbalu. <\/p>

A\u017e do roku 1988 nesm\u011bli basketbalist\u00e9 NBA hr\u00e1t na olympijsk\u00fdch hr\u00e1ch. Nejlep\u0161\u00ed hr\u00e1\u010di sv\u011bta tak nem\u011bli p\u0159\u00edle\u017eitost p\u0159edv\u00e9st sv\u00e9 schopnosti na jedn\u00e9 z nejv\u011bt\u0161\u00edch sportovn\u00edch sc\u00e9n. Toto pravidlo se zm\u011bnilo po hr\u00e1ch v Soulu, kde USA postavily t\u00fdm slo\u017een\u00fd z hr\u00e1\u010d\u016f sout\u011b\u017e\u00edc\u00edch na vysoko\u0161kolsk\u00e9 \u00farovni. <\/p>

Mnoz\u00ed jsou sk\u00e1lopevn\u011b p\u0159esv\u011bd\u010deni, \u017ee umo\u017en\u011bn\u00ed \u00fa\u010dasti hr\u00e1\u010d\u016f NBA na olympijsk\u00fdch hr\u00e1ch bylo ovlivn\u011bno p\u0159\u00e1n\u00edm USA tak u\u010dinit, ale pravdou je, \u017ee tehdej\u0161\u00ed basketbalov\u00ed z\u00e1stupci zem\u011b hlasovali proti n\u00e1vrhu na zm\u011bnu pravidla. Ameri\u010dan\u00e9 byli s v\u00fdkony vysoko\u0161kolsk\u00fdch hr\u00e1\u010d\u016f spokojeni a nepova\u017eovali za nutn\u00e9 pou\u0161t\u011bt do t\u00fdmu hr\u00e1\u010de NBA. Skute\u010dn\u00fdm d\u016fvodem pro zm\u011bnu tohoto kl\u00ed\u010dov\u00e9ho pravidla je touha olympi\u00e1dy, aby hr\u00e1li nejlep\u0161\u00ed hr\u00e1\u010di. <\/p>

Kl\u00ed\u010dovou roli sehr\u00e1l Boris Stankovi\u010d (\u0159editel FIBA), kter\u00fd l\u00e9ta bojoval proti odstran\u011bn\u00ed pravidla. \u201eNa\u0161e sout\u011b\u017ee byly pro hr\u00e1\u010de NBA uzav\u0159eny, ale mohli se z\u00fa\u010dastnit v\u0161ichni ostatn\u00ed \u2013 nebylo to v\u016fbec f\u00e9r.
