Hay fuentes que indican que el combate cuerpo a cuerpo entre dos personas tuvo lugar ya en el a\u00f1o 4000 a.C. Los enfrentamientos formaban parte del entretenimiento del Imperio Romano, y luego tambi\u00e9n en Bizancio. Con la llegada del cristianismo como religi\u00f3n, este "entretenimiento" fue prohibido, pero la leyenda del deporte sobrevivi\u00f3 y recuper\u00f3 popularidad despu\u00e9s del siglo XVI. <\/p>
Hay poca evidencia de combates de boxeo oficiales, pero un momento rara vez mencionado en el siglo XVII se considera el comienzo del boxeo como deporte. Despu\u00e9s de una pausa despu\u00e9s de esta publicaci\u00f3n, hasta 1719, se escribi\u00f3 sobre el primer campe\u00f3n en el "combate a pu\u00f1o limpio". Este es James Figg ganando el primer campeonato, y el t\u00e9rmino boxeo\/boxeo se utiliz\u00f3 por primera vez en el Mercury protestante de Londres. <\/p>
