SEASON 1974 IN FORMULA 1: Fittipaldi in the spotlight
After the brilliant success of Jackie Stewart in 1973. and the third world title, the Briton announces his retirement from Formula 1. Thus, the path of young and ambitious drivers, who increasingly manage to find a place in the most elite car race, is an idea easier.
Emerson Fittipaldi, who failed to defend his world title in 1973. has learned his lesson. In 1974 already as a McLaren driver, the Brazilian is ready for a new feat. Alas, the Formula 1 season is so dynamic and competitive that the title is decided in the final 15th race of the calendar. The United States Grand Prix hosts the final start, with Fittipaldi and McLaren and Ferrari's Clay Regazzoni going in with exactly the same number of points. However, the Italian did not finish the race and although Fittipaldi finished fourth, his points were enough to climb to the top step of the podium. His success also brought him the first constructors' world title for McLaren, who at the time were sponsored by tobacco manufacturer Marlboro.
Niki Lauda's star is also rising on the Formula 1 scene. It was in 1974. as a Ferrari driver, the Austrian also won his first start - the Spanish Grand Prix. The future 3-time world champion also triumphed in the Grand Prix of the Netherlands. Lauda also gives the public another joker for what is to come, winning 9 pole positions during the season.
