SEASON 1973 IN FORMULA 1: Three for luck
The 1973 season was marked by a number of organizational changes, some of which remain valid to this day, although undergoing certain adjustments. For the first time in the championship, racing numbers of pilots are introduced. There is also an internal division of first, second and third drivers, etc. (at that time there is no limit to the number of teams that can participate). It was in 1973. the rule was also adopted that only the world champion can change his race number to 1 within the season in which he is the current title holder. However, this is purely the organizational side of the corrections. The essential changes are other. The introduction of a forming tour is assumed. Something that is part of the regulation to this day. And also - a security car appears for the first time. This is what happens at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Against the background of numerous changes to the rules of Formula 1, the race for the world title is more than exciting. 15 races were scheduled in the 1973 season. The Spanish Grand Prix moves to the streets of Barcelona, while the Brazilian Grand Prix and the legendary Interlagos circuit make their debut. The Swedish Grand Prix also appears in the most elite car championship.
Jackie Stewart wins his 3rd and final F1 world title. The Tyrrell-Ford driver sees off competition from Emerson Fittipaldi, who remains second, and Ronnie Peterson. The presence of two Lotus-Ford drivers on the podium (Fittipaldi and Peterson) ensured the team the constructors' world title.
In 1973 future world champion James Hunt makes his debut in Formula 1. The future British star ends the season in 8th place in the general classification.
