The fifth Ballon d'Or winner - Luis Suarez

Wellthe winner of the "Golden Ball" - Luis Suarez

The wizard with the ball at his feet makes Barcelona a brilliant team with his assists

The fifth Ballon d'Or in history was awarded on December 13, 1960. Without any surprise, it is again for an attacking footballer, but for the first time he is a player of the Spanish Barcelona. We are talking about attacking midfielder Luis Suarez. The Spaniard is the first person born in this country to receive the award for the best footballer in Europe in the calendar year. Suarez leaves Real Madrid's Ferenc Puskas and Hamburger's Uwe Zeller behind.

The votes come from 19 journalists from member countries of the European football headquarters - UEFA. Luis Suarez collects 54 points thanks to 4 first places, 5 second places, 3 third places, a fourth place and another 3 fifth places from a total of 16 people placing him according to the top five. The runner-up, Puskas, deserved the first position more according to the voting journalists, but he did not have a single second position, only a third, 4 fourths and a fifth, collecting 17 points less than the prize winner. Third remains Uwe Zeller, who impresses with the Hamburger team. Alfredo Di Stefano, who triumphed with the award a year earlier, remains in fourth position with only 1 point less than Zeller.

There is again a Bulgarian representative in the ranking, but this time only one. His name is Ivan Kolev from the Sofia Center for Civil Engineering. He is in 16th position with just three points coming from one fourth and one fifth place.

The selection of Luis Suarez does not seem controversial, although he is not among the top scorers in the Spanish championship, but he still helped his Barcelona win the eighth title in their history in LaLiga with his assists. The Catalans finish level on points with Real Madrid, but have better performance than the "whites". Suarez is part of the team that also triumphed in the Fair Cities Cup tournament, where the "Blaugranas" won second place.

It is curious that Real Madrid's CASH winner and top scorer of the tournament with 12 goals, Ferenc Puskas, remains so far behind Suarez, but this could also be explained by the fact that, together with Di Stefano, they have equally contributed to another European title of Los Blancos. Puskas is also the top scorer in La Liga with 28 goals.

For Barca, the forces seem to be more evenly distributed and other Hungarians - László Kubala, Zoltan Čibor and Sándor Kočis are among the top scorers in the European tournaments, and Suarez is the man who most often creates their goals. In the Spanish championship for the winners, there is no footballer who falls into the top five among the top scorers, and the most useful player of the team is undoubtedly the number 10 wearer.

And the fifth Ballon d'Or in history is an indicator of the most valuable player, not the author of the most goals for the team that has won the most or the most important honors in football on the Old Continent. This once again confirms that voting by journalists seems to be the most correct method for selecting the winner.
