For true connoisseurs: The Zidane documentary
"Zidane: Portrait of the 21st Century" is not just a documentary, but an intimate encounter with one of the greatest footballers in history. Dedicated to the legend of French football, the screening is not built according to the standards of this type of genre, it does not explore the entire career of Zizou, but takes the viewers through the thoughts of the playmaker during a single match.
"The strip represents the most authentic Zizou," read a 2006 announcement published on Real Madrid's official website. And the film represents just that.
Zidane was filmed during a match against Villarreal, which the "royal club" won 2:1, and Zidane is both a hero and an anti-hero for his team, after receiving a red card in the match. 17 cameras capture every movement of the football player, and microphones near the touch lines record his communication with the other players. And the decision to film this particular match turns out to be excellent because it shows every side of Zidane as a footballer.
The film follows Zidane's game with authentic commentary from him. The decision to feature Zidane's portrait in this way was due to a similar film from the 1970s dedicated to George Best. The directors of the production are Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno.
“This is not a documentary. It is a psychological portrait reflecting the state of mind. We wanted to make a portrait of the man in the 21st century and we settled on Zidane. For some, he is a big celebrity, but his personality goes far beyond that," Gordon says of the film he created.
Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a fantastic way to experience one of the greatest footballers in history in a unique and completely authentic way. The film is in French.
