Fury's Greatest 5: Tyson dethrones Klitschko
Tyson Fury's amateur boxing career is not particularly impressive. Yes, in 2008 he became the champion of Great Britain. But it is a fact that medals from European, world or Olympic games are absent from his successes. Not for men either. Unlike him, only in 1996, Wladimir Klitschko took two impressive medals. The Ukrainian not only reached the final of the European Championship, which he lost to the Russian Alexey Lezin, but also took the Olympic title in Atlanta. Of course, Klitschko's career is impressive outside of boxing, and in the professional ring he is even more impressive. It is precisely for this reason that in 2015 he was the big favorite before his meeting with the British Tyson Fury.
At the time, Vitali Klitschko's younger brother was at the top of the heavyweight food chain. The past remembers the losses to the Americans Ross Purity and Laymon Brewster, as well as to the South African Corey Sanders. But the last of them was in 2004, which makes Wladimir undefeated for 11 years. During this period, the Ukrainian won 22 consecutive matches, and one of them was against the Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev. Povetkin, Vach, Hey, Chagaev and Peter are just some of the stars who never dethroned Vladimir.
At the same time, Tyson Fury is already seriously breaking through among the heaviest and has recorded 24 consecutive successes. In his last two matches, the Briton has dealt with serious boxers such as Christian Hammer and Derek Chisora. Despite everything, not many people believe in his success against Klitschko.
But in the ring, Tyson is more than decisive. Despite the full 12-round format, it was clear for all to see who was better in the match. The Englishman won by unanimous decision with scores between 115-112 and 116-111. The clash is not particularly attractive, with both taking a rather cautious approach. However, successful shots are 86 to 52 in favor of Fury. Tyson is also the more active of the two boxers, landing a total of 371 to 231 punches. The match effectively ended the era of dominance of the Klitschko brothers in professional boxing. From that moment on, they did not win a single fight. After the match, Fury said it all in a few sentences: “It's a dream come true. We worked so hard for this!”.
