The little-known man behind the memorable speech on 'Every Sunday'
Undoubtedly one of the greatest sports movies of all time is "Any Given Synday". In it, Al Pacino not only gives one of the most incredible speeches in sports movie history, but maybe even in Hollywood history. Although the film is about American football, the speech of one of the greatest actors in the United States touches every single sports fan in a deep and meaningful way.
The speech in question is the work of Jamie Williams, who was one of the screenwriters who worked on the first version of the screenplay that formed the basis of Oliver Stone's brilliant film. Few know that he is a former representative of the sport himself, with a full 12 years in the NFL behind him and was selected in the 3rd round of the 1983 draft.
After his career, Williams is an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, being part of the Oliver Stone project that shattered expectations that a movie based on American football could not become a box office hit. He himself likes to say in interviews that everything that is in Pacino's speech, he personally experienced during his career. Unlike Pacino, however, he never touched the magic of the Super Bowl.
Williams' role may not be large, as the script has been remade many times, but he has brought authenticity to Pacino's words spoken before the most important game in the careers of all his football players. The big credit for the movie actually goes to the author of the book "On Any Given Sunday" - Pat Twomey, who is also a former football player. The final script of the film is the work of Oliver Stone (the director) and Daniel Payne and John Logan - the main screenwriters of the film.
