The original "Space Dunks" - a real madhouse with Bucks Bunny and Michael Jordan
In 2021, the basketball world was rocked by the long-awaited second Space Dives movie. As you know, the original is from 1996 with the participation of Michael Jordan, and after more than two decades, fans of the Warner Bros. animated projection have been waiting with interest to see what LeBron James will create in a production and acting role. But the King's film with Bugs Bunny wouldn't exist if it weren't for the memorable and original Space Dives starring Michael Jordan.
The film itself is extremely significant to the story, as it was the first to be produced by Warner Bros.'s dedicated animation studio, and was a blend of feature and animation. Also, for the first time, a real-world image (Michael Jordan) was screened with the cartoon characters of "Wacky Drawings" - perhaps the most popular cartoon characters at the time.
The film itself is a pleasant comedy for children and adults, in which Michael Jordan is kidnapped by Bugs Bunny and company. The reason - an alien threat hangs over the "Wacky Drawings" and they are doomed to oblivion on an alien planet if they don't win a basketball game against the aliens. The reason Jordan is wanted is the fact that the aliens have stolen the talent of a number of top stars in the NBA and the "Wacky Drawings" have no chance on the floor against the civilization trying to enslave them. Although reluctant, Jordan agrees to help, and this leads to an epic duel decided in the last seconds.
The plot is simple and very pleasant, and the film, although with a lot of criticism from the Hollywood guild, is a real success. Space Dunks became the highest-grossing basketball movie, grossing just over $250 million in 1996. The project itself cost just over $80 million, making a cool profit of around $170 million.
In comparison, Space Shuttle 2 cost a whopping $150 million to make and barely managed to gross $162.5 million.
