THE UNPLEASANT SIDE OF BOXING AND HOW DANGEROUS A SPORT CAN BE?

Regardless of its many fans around the world, boxing at its core is violence. Yes, the rivalry between two athletes with good physique and preparation is undoubtedly a beautiful and intriguing sport, but in the end everything is decided by strength. In other words, the better just wins.

According to many, boxing in its modern form is not among the most dangerous sports. Of course, the key here is "modern". According to statistics from 1884. to date nearly 2,000 boxers have lost their lives immediately after a fight. With the modernization of the sport, the rules and safety measures, the cases have drastically decreased, but not disappeared. For reference only from 2000. so far, there have been 33 fatal cases, 6 of which are only with Americans.

As medicine advances, the tests that boxers undergo before each match become more extensive. Professional athletes also have medical records with detailed condition information that can go back years.

One of the cases that gained wide popularity in our country was the death of Boris Stanchov in 2019. The tragedy occurred on September 21 at a boxing gala in Shkodra, Albania. Boris Stanchov dies in the ring due to a heart problem. Initially, the Bulgarian Professional Boxing Union announced that the deceased was Jesus Velichkov, another born boxer. However, Velichkov's file does not contain any data on problems preventing his participation. There is no information about any cardiac complaints. This is what led the investigation to the shocking conclusion that in fact the deceased was not Velichkov, but Stanchov. The reason for the identity change is unclear. According to acquaintances, Boris Stanchov used Jesus Velichkov's permits in order not to record losses to his name, however, according to others, this was a "loophole" to compete despite the medical complaints he had.
