The overlooked superstars left out of the 1992 USA Dream Team
There is hardly any doubt about who the greatest basketball team in history is. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the US selection for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when American basketball appeared in full glory in Spain, trampled everything on its way to gold, and made the sport itself (almost) single-handedly one of the greatest industries in the world.
Chuck Daly's team includes incredible names such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and a number of other stars. In addition, a representative of the college championship was taken - Christian Leitner (a tradition that was followed until the last Olympics, in which, however, Grek Popovich did not call a single college student to the USA team).
However, the final line-up caused huge discussions across the Ocean and even led to the end of friendships and violent scandals (in one case in particular). Here are the five basketball players who should have been on the "dream team" but were not drafted.
5. James Worthy (Los Angeles Lakers)
Magic Johnson and Larry Bird are in the prime of their careers, but they are important parts of the USA lineup. Given that the idea is to build the team from past deserving basketball players, Worthy is an ideal choice. At that time, he was still an important part of the Lakers' selection, one of the main scorers of the team, and it seems absurd that one of the 50 greatest in history was not part of the "Dream Team" of the USA.
4. Reggie Miller
The Indiana Pacers star is a three-point shooter and one of the league's rising stars. Due to the hallmarks of that era of basketball, where the three was not that important, Miller was never considered a basketball player who could make that team. But it could definitely help.
3. Dominic Wilkins
At that time, the Atlanta winger was among the best scorers in the NBA. Averaging 28.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, it's completely absurd that he isn't part of the all-star roster for the Olympics. Even more surprising is that no analyst in the US is surprised by Wilkins' absence.
2. Shaquille O'Neal
The most dominant force in basketball - this is how Shaq was defined by many after his phenomenal career. And he got his chance to be part of the All-Star team, but it wasn't until 1996, leading his version of the Dream Team to gold in Atlanta. Despite showing total dominance with the Orlando team and being a favorite of millions of fans, he is not part of Chuck Daly's selection. To this day, it remains a reminder that it was a huge mistake by the former Detroit Pistons coach.
1. Isaiah Thomas
At the time, Detroit's small guard was one of the best guards in the NBA, and one of the best players overall. He led the Pistons to 2 consecutive titles, one of which he won in one leg. Yes, the 1991/92 season wasn't one of Thomas' most impressive, but with the addition of Magic and Bird to the lineup, it seems a must for Detroit's point guard to be there as well. Alas, that doesn't happen. At the time, there was a serious feud between him and Bulls stars Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. This continues to this day, with Thomas refusing to speak to both of them, believing them to be the people who banned him from being called up to the Barcelona Olympics.
