What happens to the anonymous guy who sent Tyson into retirement?
Mike Tyson will forever go down in history as the "baddest man on the planet," even though he was never considered the greatest boxer in history, a title that is currently firmly held by Muhammad Ali. But in fact, Iron Mike's career is perhaps the most recognizable, the most talked about and the most talked about even today, decades after the fight that officially ended his professional career.
In 2005, the unknown Kevin McBride gained worldwide popularity after the Irishman became the boxer who sent Tyson into retirement. After the meeting, Mike throws down the gloves and simply says: I was desperate. I wanted to win. I felt like I was 120 years old." I could have gone on but I knew I would not win and I would be defeated. I can't do it anymore."
Until that moment in 2005, when McBride stepped into the ring in round #7 to finish what he started against Tyson, hardly anyone knew. However, the moment Tyson unfurled the white towel and surrendered, his name was heard by hundreds of millions around the world. But what happened to this anonymous fighter who sank into oblivion after his 15 minutes of fame?
After a series of interviews and TV appearances, McBride returned to the ring, but without any significant success. The tough Irishman still won his first appearance in the ring after the memorable triumph over "the baddest man on the planet", defeating Byron Pauley, but for the rest of his career he recorded only one win and 6 losses. Still, he has a positive balance in history - 35 wins and 10 losses, and his only championship belt is from the IBC - heavyweight champion of the Americas.
Today, McBride is very far from boxing. He is a general laborer in a company that deals with landscape architecture and leads a modest life. Of course, when in 2020 Mike Tyson decided to start a series of exhibition matches, McBride was found by the media and admitted that he would get in the ring with Mike again.
"It will be great to get in the ring with him again. He'll want to make up for the loss if that happens, and for me it could help me financially and help my kids get into college," McBride said at the time, but, like in 2005, he disappeared from the media attention, and a possible rematch with Mike remains unrealized. And the situation will probably remain unchanged.
