SEASON 1996 IN FORMULA 1: HILL'S PAYBACK
After two years in a row, Williams driver Damon Hill remained one step away from the world title at the expense of German sensation Michael Schumacher, the Brit is looking for revenge. Tired of being called a "contender," Hill is willing to do anything to get himself heard as a "champion." Season 1996 in Formula 1 is proof that dreams do come true.
At the beginning of the season, it became clear that the two-time world champion with Benetton, Michael Schumacher, was leaving the team for Ferrari. The Scuderia is desperately looking for a driver who can restore the glory of the "black horses" and break the series of years of failures in the battle for the world title. Williams-Renault, for its part, once again trusted Damon Hill, who, after the death of Arton Senna in 1994, became the leader of the team. However, the British are parting ways with David Coulthard at the expense of Formula 1 debutant Jacques Villeneuve. Coulthard joins McLaren Mercedes.
The battle for the world title in 1996. is extremely cruel. Alas, Michael Schumacher is unable to oppose the ambition of Hill, who has already been chasing the trophy for four years and is lagging in the defense of his title. Thus the Briton won the first and only world title in his career. Michael Schumacher finished third after failing to fully adapt to Ferrari's new car. Jacques Villeneuve sensationally placed second. In his first season in Formula 1, the Canadian won 4 starts and helped his teammate in the battle for the constructors' title. Logically, the world team title goes to Williams-Renault. Ferrari is second and Benetton is third.
Curiously, after getting what he most dreams of, Damon Hill announced that he was leaving Williams-Renault due to a misunderstanding with team owner Sir Frank Williams.
In 1996 it was accepted that teams would wear the number of the place they finished in the previous season of the car championship.
