There's No Stopping the Island Boys: Season 1963 in Formula 1
After Graham Hill's triumph in the 1962 season, the thirst for new success seized the Briton. He likes the taste of victory and already in the first of 10 starts in the new year 1963, he gives a request to repeat what he did, this time with the British Racing Motors team. The thought of winning the world title again with a British team is central to him, as well as establishing Britain as a key factor in Formula 1. For one thing, he is right, the Brits will have reason to celebrate this season. However, the reason will not be Graham Hill, but another pilot - Jim Clark.
Piloting a Lotus Climax, Clarke was more than convincing during the 1963 season. Won 7 of 10 starts. The only races he lost were the first starts for the Monaco Grand Prix, the German Grand Prix and the US Grand Prix. In all others, the triumph is for Jim Clark. Thus, in addition to congratulating himself on the world title, the Brit also set a record for the most victories in one season of Formula 1-7. His achievement was bettered by Arton Senna in 1988, winning 8 starts. The difference, however, is that the calendar then contained 16 races, so the win-to-start ratio has been in Clarke's favor to this day. Second and third are Graham Hill and Richie Ginter respectively. Lotus Climax constructors are above all.
The 1963 season saw the end of the ATS team, founded by ex-Ferrari employees, for which Phil Hill also drove. The failure of the Italian "experiment" removed the 1961 world champion from Formula 1. The American returned to the track only in 1966.
